Chapter 15

Enough

Noni

* * *

“It’s just a stupid idea, Noni. Who doesn’t want to find out the sex of the baby?” Jason’s angry voice carries through the phone, making my head throb even more. It’s been two weeks since that ultrasound and he hasn’t let me forget it. “And you run around with that man like I’m nothing to you.”

“I haven’t been anywhere with Deacon.”

I honestly haven’t. Since the night we talked until two in the morning, I’ve tried to keep my distance from him. It’s not that we’ve done something wrong or that I’m feeling guilty.

Other than the one night with the flat tire when I had to make myself walk away, he and I have never crossed the line. No, I’m keeping my distance because of this bullshit.

“No, but you have no problem taking his side over the man that loves you. The man who cares about you.”

“It’s not like that.” Despite how many times I have said this, he still won’t believe me.

“I don’t know what to do here. Are you just not happy with me?”

I pinch the bridge of my nose and close my eyes to tamp down the pain in my head.

“Are you even listening to me?”

Yes, how can I not? You’ve been bitching about this for weeks. Instead of saying that, I reply, “Yes. You know I still love you.”

The words taste funny coming off my lips. They have an acidic after taste. I do love Jason. We have years behind us. How could I not love him?

“Well, you don’t act like it.”

I huff, leaning my head back in my chair. “How about you come over tonight? I’ll cook a nice dinner and we can just hang out. You can leave work at home and I can—”

“So now it’s my fault we don’t hang out? Because I’m trying to make a living to take care of my family, it’s my fault?”

“I didn’t say that. I just suggested for tonight we could leave the work out of it.”

A knock at my door causes me to look up. I forgot it’s Thursday and today is my fruit delivery day. I wave Deacon in, and he places the bag of fruit on my desk. Before he turns to leave, I hold up a finger to stop him.

I had a late start this morning, so I didn’t eat much, and I’ve been on the phone with Jason all morning. I haven’t been able to stop for lunch. It’s at this moment Ace decides to notify his father of my neglect. I clutch a hand over my loud, grumbling stomach.

Deacon smirks at me before pulling a banana out of the bag and peeling it back before handing it to me. I take a bite and smile. It’s cold, just the way I like it.

Jason’s voice over my speaker phone causes me to turn my attention back to him.

“I work because someone has to pay for this baby, Noni. That little business you run may not be around forever.”

I stare down at the phone and can’t believe his nerve.
